Vladimir Putin, President of Russia appointed new defence minister named Andrei Belousov who was a former deputy prime minister having specialization in economics. He will work into Ukraine war for more than two years.

Putin replaced Sergei Shoigu, former defence minister since 2012 and appointed him the secretary of Security Council of Russia. He replaced former secretary of Security Council, Nikolai Patrushev. Sergei Shoigu will also have responsibilities for the military industrial complex.

After sending tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022 which was called a special military operation, these are the most significant steps and these changes are need to be approved by parliamentarians. Shoigu’s role will be regarded as senior in defence ministry.

The chief of Russia’s General Staff, Valery Gerasimov will remain in post including someone on having role in directing the war. Sergei Lavrov will remain in his post of the country’s veteran foreign minister.

The Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, said that this change by Putin is really wanted as Russia will soon coming into the situation like Soviet Unio in mid-1980s, when it was accounted by military and law enforcement for 7.4% of state spending.

“The one who is more open to innovations is the one who will be victorious on the battlefield,” Peskov said.
