The police chief of the University of California, Los Angeles, John Thomas has reassigned to the post temporarily. This is done in the wake of criticism over his handling of recent campus demonstrations. This reassignment was announced by Mary Osako, UCLA Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications on Wednesday. This reassignment is the part of broader reevaluation of campus security at UCLA. This is done after a period of protests and establishment of a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus. This situation got accelerated when campus was attacked and subsequent arrests of 200 individuals were made on April 30.
For an overhaul security operations, ULCA has announced the creation of a new chief safety officer position on May 5 to review all aspects of campus security operations. A former Sacramento police chief, Rick Braziel has been appointed as a leader of the newly established Office of Campus Safety.
Chancellor Block is now all set to testify before a Republican-led House committee in Washington on Thursday in relation to protests and security measures on campus.
